The Hibbing Disc Golf course was opened May 9th, 2007[1]. It is located in historical North Hibbing by the Hull Rust Mine. The idea for the course started with a group of about ten people who would just mess around throwing discs at the L&M hill in Hibbing[2]. Eventually they out grew this course and moved forward to try to construct one for themselves that suited them better. The Hibbing Disc Golf Association (HDGA) a non-profit group constructed the course[3]. The course consists of 18 holes and are all constructed with the mine in mind. The members of the HDGA host many tournaments at this course throughout the year hosting many discers[4]. The HDGA membership includes a ten-dollar membership fee per year for course maintenance[5].
The course was constructed by the HDGA through only volunteer labor and donations given by local businesses and also local groups[6]. An eagle scout going for his highest award came and put in benches throughout the course to try to earn this award[7]. A professional course designer came in to make the course one of the top ten in the state[8]. To get the land that the course is built on they went through mining companies who owned the land and once they were granted permission to use it, they had very few things to do to make the course able to play on[9].
The course was originally designed for the members of the HDGA to play on after they out grew there self made course[10]. Now Hibbing has something that has pulled our community together for a wonderful outdoor sport that ages 5 up to 65 can play[11].
